Comparison of Early American Literature Essay
The two selections Of Plymouth Plantation by William Bradford and The General History of Virginia by John Smith are some of the earlier pieces of American literature. Although they were both written in the same time period the style and attitudes vary greatly. William Bradford had a very direct form of writing; commonly known as ââ¬Å"plain puritanâ⬠style, whereas, John Smith had a somewhat confusing, more elaborate, writing style. Bradfordââ¬â¢s piece also seemed more accurate than John Smithââ¬â¢s account. For example, John Smith wrote of his capture by ââ¬Å"â⬠¦three hundred bowmen, conducted by the king of Pamunkeeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ which seems more than a little exaggerated. After all, it generally doesnââ¬â¢t take three hundred men to capture one. Smith exaggerated many times in order to boast about himself. There are many times when he refers to his greatness. In the following quote he boasts of his leadership skills and compassion for his fellow men while belittling his superiors: ââ¬Å"The new President and Martin, being little beloved, of weak judgment in dangers, and less industry in peace, committed the managing of all things abroad to Captain Smith, who, by his own example, good words, and fair promises, set some to mow, others to bind thatch, some to build houses, others to thatch them, himself always bearing the greatest task for his own share, so that in short time her provided most of them lodgings, neglecting any for himselfâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ William Bradford, on the other hand, boasts about his colony: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦there was but six or seven sound persons who to their great commendations, be it spoken, spared no pains night or day, but with abundance of toil and hard of their own health, fetched them wood, made them fires, dressed them meat, made their beds, washed their loath some clothes, clothed and unclothed them.â⬠Bradford and Smith, both leaders of their colonies, wrote of their hardships in the new world. Despite these similarities the way they acted was very different. When John Smith writes about the Native Americans he refers to them as ââ¬Å"savagesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"barbarians.â⬠He even calls Pocahontas, the girl who saved his life, ââ¬Å"a young wench.â⬠Bradford writes of the Native Americans asà human beings. He even had a peace treaty with them that lasted twenty-four years. They also had different motifs for writing, which may contribute to the many differences. Smith wrote his selection to encourage people to come to America to find excitement and adventure. Bradford simply wanted to inform the readers of what the lives of colonists was really like. As different are their writing styles, motifs, and views these two men share some common ground, one being they are some of the earliest works of American Literature. So no matter how different or alike Smith and Bradfordââ¬â¢s writings are, History of Virginia and Of Plymouth Plantation will always be remembered as great American literature.

Food Rituals in Hinduism
Hindu Traditions: Food and Purification Ashley LeBlanc Introduction to Eastern Religions Dr. Patricia Campbell November 16, 2010 LeBlanc 2 Hinduism is a religion that originated in India and is still practiced by most of the Natives as well as the people who have migrated from India to other parts of the world. Statistically there are over seven hundred million Hindus, mainly in Bangladesh, India and Nepal. Approximately eighty percent of the population in India is Hindu (Encyclopaedia Britannica n. d. ).The word Hindu comes from an ancient Sanskrit term meaning ââ¬Å"dwellers by the Indus River,â⬠referring to the location of India's earliest know civilization, the Pakistan. The religion suggests commitment to or respect for an ideal way of life known as Dharma. Hinduism absorbs foreign ideas and beliefs making it have a wide variety of beliefs and practices. This has given it a character of social and doctrinal system that extends to every aspect of life. One of the most impo rtant aspects of the Hindu tradition is the food and purification process. Not only is the concept of purity and food seen in sacred texts, but also is a daily practice within Hindu practitioners. According to the Bhagavad Gita, ââ¬Å"All beings come into existence from food. Food comes from rains. Rains originate from the performance of sacrifices. And sacrifice is born out of doing prescribed dutiesâ⬠(3:13). Therefore, food is verily an aspect of Brahman, which according to Jeffery Brodd is ââ¬Å"the eternal, unchanging, infinite, immanent, and transcendent reality which is the Divine Ground of all matter, energy, time, space, being, and everything beyond in this Universeâ⬠(Brodd 2003, 17).Since the food is a gift from the gods, it should be treated with respect. Also in the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna states that there are three types of sacrifices, along with austerity and charity. Sattvic (cold) food is one that increases longevity, purity, strength, happiness, and tast e; these foods are usually juicy or oily. These types of foods are allowed, and mostly recommended as offerings to the gods. Rajasic (or hot) includes foods that are bitter, sour, hot, spicy, and salty which is believed to lead to disease, unhappiness, and sorrow. When a LeBlanc person eats these foods without sacrifice, it is believed that they will develop the qualities they convey and act upon them (Michaels 2004, 183-184). When it comes to preparing food, the person preparing it is closely speculated. Purity is the goal during preparation. Chants and purification rituals with incense and offerings are done before, and sometimes after every meal. In the Hindu tradition, purification is not only an expression of external status, but also make one pure internally and morally. For example, a butcher or a farmerââ¬â¢s products would be considered impure for the fact that they are harming innocent living creatures for sustenance, whereas bakers and milkmen are reaping products withou t harm (Arthur M. Sackler Gallery 1996). The age, status, and sex of the person cooking and serving the food are also taken into account. Hindus also believe food that has been purified can be re-polluted by touching or even looking at it. Because of this, women who are menstruating cannot prepare or serve food for the fear of pollution. At the same time, many sacrifices and offerings are performed based on reciprocity. Another method in Hindu tradition to keep food pure during consumption is to eat with the right hand, as the left hand is seen to be impure since it is used for cleaning after defecation. 3 Another aspect that is closely looked at is who may accept cooked food from whom. The usual custom goes that the young can accept food from the elder, the inferior rank from the superior, the wife from the husband, and so on. The only exception in Hindu tradition is in weddings. In this circumstance, the brideââ¬â¢s family cooks for the usually higher-ranking groom and his family . Another example noted in Michaelââ¬â¢s book is when ââ¬Å"Brahman cooks, when hired by higher ranking Brahmans; or temple feedings, when the food is seen as leftovers of the gods and thus all believers stand at the same level and eat next to one anotherâ⬠(2004, 183). Also in terms of leftovers, it is seen as an act of respect if the wife consumes the leftovers of her LeBlanc 4 husband, or eats after him from his plate. This is deliberate pollution as the pure food has already been consumed and any leftovers have been touched by human hands, and thus impure. Food to Hindus is a lifelong religious and social concern; it stands at the core of religion and society. Some even say that ââ¬Å"[food] shapes family life, caste-and-marriage rules, and religious and spiritual valuesâ⬠(Khare 2004, 415). There are many taboos, ritual exclusions, preferences and prescriptions concerning the conception of ââ¬Ëvegetarianismââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ënonvegetariansimââ¬â¢.This taboo creates four separate areas of India that practice either vegetarianism or nonvegeratianism differently; The north constitutes Kashmir and Punjab to Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh; the ââ¬Ëwesternââ¬â¢ includes Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, the ââ¬Ëeasternââ¬â¢ region Bihar, Bengal, Assam, Orissa, and other northeastern states, and the ââ¬Ësouthernââ¬â¢ includes Kannada, Talminadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh (Khare 2004, 415). Customary ways in these areas are passed on from generation to generation, and are practiced religiously. Food taboos are a historically complicated subject for Hindus. For example, the beef taboo creates ecological and political conflicts. According to Khare, ââ¬Å"Brahmanical deification of cow played a crucial role long-term vis-a-vis Buddhism, producing a prologned religious, historical, and regional tussel, yielding, in the process, changing definitons of both nonviolence and vegetariansimâ⬠(2004, 416). Today, fol lowers of Vishnu are most often vegetarians and practice right-handed rituals, whereas worshippers of the goddess justify meat eating, drinking, and left-handed rituals. Therefore, more modern interpretations of Hinduism in relation to dietary practices can still differ. In terms of prasada , or ââ¬Ëblessed foodââ¬â¢, are primarily vegetarian when being offered to gods such as Vishnu, Rama, Krishna, and Ganesh. One must also remember that not all goddess worshipers are meat-eaters, some still practice vegetarianism. (Khare 2004, 417). LeBlanc In terms of the actual ritual of purification, it differs from each practicioner. Hindus constantly practice the methods of obtaining control and exercising restraint methods of purification and of cultivation of positive moral qualities. Food in Hinduism, as previously mentioned, is one of the most celebrated rituals. For example, a childââ¬â¢s first feeding is celebrated as a samskara ( celebration at a stage of life). The ritual first begins with a clean 5 surrounding. When food is served, water is sprinkled around it. This is meant to purify the foods and make it worthy for sacrifice. Then, food is offered to five pranas (breath- one of the five organs of vitality or sensation) (Widgery 1930, 235); The five pranas, along with their explanation are as follows: Prana is responsible for the beating of the heart and breathing. Prana enters the body through the breath and is sent to every cell through the circulatory system.Apana is responsible for the elimination of waste products from the body through the lungs and excretory systems. Udana produces sounds through the vocal apparatus, as in speaking, singing, laughing, and crying. Also it represents the conscious energy required to produce the vocal sounds corresponding to the intent of the being. Hence Samyama on udana gives the higher centers total control over the body. Samana controls the digestion of food and cell metabolism (i. e. the repair and manufacture o f new cells and growth). Samana also includes the heat regulating processes of the body. Auras are projections of this current.By meditational practices one can see auras of light around every being. Yogis who do special practise on samana can produce a blazing aura at will. Vyana is responsible for the expansion and contraction processes of the body, e. g. the voluntary muscular system (Prana 2010). LeBlanc 6 In conclusion, we can see through Hindu rituals and practices that food and purity plays an important role in everyday life. The importance of purity when consuming sacrificed foods or foods offered to a chosen deity is great. Hinduism thrives despite numerous reforms and shortcuts through gradual modernization and urbanization of Indian life. Thus, Hinduism, which sustained India through centuries of foreign occupation and internal disruption, continues to serve a vital function by giving passionate meaning and supportive form to the lives of Hindus today.

1920s - time of sustained economic progress Essay
1920s - time of sustained economic progress - Essay Example Although this picture of America presented a favorable image of life for Americans, others believed that it also presented a picture of an America which was shallow, greedy, and empty, one where people were judged for their wealth and their properties. They also believed that Americaââ¬â¢s values were crumbling and that hedonism was fast becoming a norm in their society. This paper shall analyze these themes, and to what extent each group is right or wrong. This paper shall first provide an overview of the various developments seen during the 1920s, secondly, an analysis of these developments in terms of their implications shall also be presented. Lastly, concluding remarks shall end this discussion. This paper is being carried out in order to establish a clear understanding of the 1920s and how the developments during this time impacted on the American people in general. America in the 1920s marked a transition period, from a wartime economy to a peacetime economy. And its econom y flourished during this time as it was able to engage in mass production and consumerism. Soldiers returning from war with their wages were reintroduced into the workforce and the post-World War recession soon saw an end. The 1920s also marked an era of increased consumer spending which was further supported by mass production of various consumer products. Changes in government policies, mostly in relation to the reduction of the national debt, of taxes, and of the protection of farming interests, and cutting back of immigration led to the economic boom (Filip). President Coolidge also imposed policies which sought to increase taxes on the rich and prevent government interference in private businesses (Filip). Soon enough, his approach was able to sustain economic growth for most of the 1920s. However, overconfidence in these economic policies also caused the stock market to crash, leading to the Great Depression. The sustained recovery during the early 1920s caused the Federal res erve to expand credit, as market rates were decreased; in effect, the value of the dollar increased by 60% during this time (Schultz, 349). This caused the Americans to over-extend their spending. As was mentioned above, such over-extension led to the stock market crash in the late 1920s, and the crash and the depression that followed was very much prolonged. Nevertheless, despite the fact that the favorable economic growth in the 1920s led to the Great Depression, the 1920s marked a bountiful time for the Americans (Schultz, p. 351). The automobile, movie, radio and chemical industries experienced much growth during this time. Cars were now mass-produced and they also assisted various businesses in the country, including hotels, service stations, and highway building (Schultz, p. 350). Radio advertising also soon became the primary means of advertising for many businesses. Hollywood also experienced a very rosy period as watching movies became an affordable activity. Commercial avi ation also helped advance more economic progress and activities. New roads, railroads, and highways were opened and paved and electricity as well as telephone lines soon run through each state (Schultz, p. 349). Massive urbanization was taking place and it was slowly expanding into the rural towns. More people flocked into the urban areas looking for jobs and various opportunities. Beyond, economic progress, womenââ¬â¢s right to vote soon became firmly entrenched into the state policies (Schultz, p. 349)

- Research Methods - Discuss the following statement. Unstructured interviews should only be used as a precursor for a more structured approach to data collection - Essay Example Semi-structured interviews are flexible and they include both open and closed-ended questions but the interviewer adjusts the series of the questions based on the context of responses from the participants. Unstructured interview is a method that elicits the social realities of people; thus it has become widely employed by sociologists and anthropologists in research field process. Unstructured interviews should be only used as a precursor for a more structured approach in data collection in research process. This is because unstructured interviews are best applied for exploration when there is a limited understanding of the domain, or as a precursor to more focused and detailed structured interviews (Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill, 2009, p. 111). Unstructured interviews do not follow a prearranged schedule or list of questions unlike structured interview which employs a prearranged set of questions. Therefore, they can be used as the precursor of structured interview since this method is similar to survey research methods of data collection and they are administered orally instead of writing. The most significant and widely used unstructured interview originates from the ethnographic practice of anthropologists (Honey and Mumford, 1997, p. 36). Many anthropologists and sociologists employed unstructured interview for gathering information through participant o bservations and record field notes taking as they observe the sidelines and also joins the activities of the participants. Unstructured interviews are effectual because researchers identifies one or more key informants to interview on a continuing basis or take short notes while observing and at the same time questioning participants. This is vital because it provides first hand information and the method attempt to solve difficulties in question interpretations. Human Trafficking Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Human Trafficking - Assignment Example Under the federal rule, coerced work is a harsh outline of trafficking people. Most victims of human trafficking are taken for labor purposes. For example, some could be recruited to run errands in construction sites. Others, especially children could be taken for home servitude, sexual use or labor. Human trafficking for sexual purpose is common and most children, close to 70% are trafficked for sexual exploitation (Gozdziak & Bump, 2008, 6). The stern types of trafficking individuals are distinct. One, sex trafficking: in this case a profitable sex act is induced by power, coercion and fraud in which the individual is pressurized to perform such act. The other form human trafficking is through the recruitment, transportation, provision, or getting the person for work via the use of fraud or pressure with the aim of subjecting him to involuntary servitude. In addition, a person is also subjected to peonage or slavery (Armaline et al. 2013). However, human trafficking can also happen in work circumstances such as home servitude, immigrant farming and labor in a person-like plant. Whether an action falls in the description of trafficking is based on the kind of labor for the victim and the use of force and coercion to get or retain the work. The exception is that the human trafficking covers the utilization of small children for profitable sexual actions even when there is no fraud or force (Armaline et al. 2013). Human trafficking also involves individuals who are detained against their will to pay off arrears. A victimââ¬â¢s original accord to tour or do the work does not permit the boss later limit the individualââ¬â¢s liberty. In addition, the agreement should not also let the employer restrict the workerââ¬â¢s liberty by use of threats or force to get refunds. In the United States, the full measurements of the challenge of human trafficking are hard to gauge. However, it is clear that human trafficking is a key basis
